This entertainment, movie, TV, whatever industry is tough. Well, all industry’s are tough, but this industry is especially tough. The reason I say that isn’t because our work is any more or less difficult than anyone else’s.
I say that because our industry is smothered in other people’s uninvited opinions and judgements. However informed or uninformed they might be.
These opinions and judgements often cloud our plans, ideas, and dreams with doubt, insecurity, and shame.
We hear of a fellow filmmaker’s great success and we leap into our script ready to take it on only to have another conversation with another fellow filmmaker whose film was a complete disaster. So we end up back where we started. Full of all our plans to take the leap, but too scared to take a foot off the ground.
We are left standing in the same spot with a script in our hands because we can’t find anyone’s path to follow.
Well, friends, I say Do You.
You don’t need the reassurance of someone else’s journey to validate your own. Sometimes your inspiration needs to come from within.
So what if your favorite director went to a prestigious film school and made 20 short films before making his first award winning feature. His/her journey does not prove or disprove your own.
We are in an industry of artists. So don’t look for convention amongst the unconventional.
Get educated, make a plan, and just do it.
